LaToya truly enjoys meeting with her clients, working together to accomplish their current goals, while looking ahead to prepare her clients for the future. She explains, “A consistent issue that I see is that many clients do not realize they have an estate planning issue or at least do not understand the magnitude of it. They may have executed a simple will, then later they started a business. Their situation has greatly changed and now they need some more complex planning.” In addition, she takes great pride in providing quick and concise answers to help simplify things. “Most clients compliment me on my communication style. I strongly believe in clear and concise communication with clients as much as possible. For me, I do not like surprises when getting a service, so I am conscious of that with clients.”

Before attending law school, LaToya completed her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and spent time as a licensed therapist. “Prior to becoming an attorney, I worked as a mental health therapist. For me, estate planning was second nature as it allows me to build relationships using very similar principles that I set in my practice as a therapist.” After a few years, she decided to attend Western Michigan University Cooley Law School to obtain her J.D. It is there that she developed an interest in estate planning while interning at an estate planning clinic. “The clinic allowed me to take those skills I learned while being a therapist and incorporate those into the legal field, specifically with estate planning.”

After law school, she worked at private bank for high net worth individuals in Dallas, working primarily in estate and tax planning for clients. “This position allowed me to use both my education and personal experience to again help clients protect their families. Through such experiences I saw the importance of planning sooner rather than later so that not only their lives were better, but their family’s as well.” LaToya wanted to continue to grow in her estate planning experience and began looking to transition to a firm who focused on that exact thing. “What initially drew me to KB Carlton, PLLC was the unique, family-oriented atmosphere. We all treat each other like family and support one another. We are able to provide exceptional estate and business planning services to clients and gain a friend in the process!”

Outside of work, LaToya enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, and trying new restaurants. She also enjoys cycling, running and attending classes at Orange Theory Fitness. When she wants to take a break, she enjoys binge watching a series on Netflix.
